4 Ways to Make Your Home More Secure

Hny5rft June 09, 2022 Home Security Leave a Comment

In 2020, 6.4 million homes were targeted by burglars, only in the United States, with losses of about $17.5 billion. Such figures pump up the home security market, which has to deal with an increasing demand for home security products and services. From high-tech solutions to massive padlocks, there’s a lot you can do to keep your home out of reach for burglars and invaders.

Shields Up

Some security solutions look like sci-fi stuff in the age of the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and smart cameras. Doors, locks, and cameras can be operated remotely, from wherever you are, straight from your mobile phone.

While some security companies charge top dollar for their services, there are some pretty effective DIY (Do-It-Yourself) and low-tech solutions you can apply to your home and make it safer now. Check four of them below.

Pin Your Windows

Pry bars can easily break through double-hung window latches. You can reinforce your window by installing a pin lock in it. Drill a hole through both windows and stick a pin in it. With pin locks, burglars would have to pretty much destroy your window, which wouldn’t be silent, quick, or convenient for them. The same trick goes well on patio and garage doors.

Alarms and Lights

It’s possible to find some pretty inexpensive and effective alarms these days. Check out Alarm Grid to have an idea of what’s on offer. Motion-detector lights are also beneficial, as they prevent invaders from coming stealthily. If you install it outside, like in the garden or garage, it’ll be enough to send most burglars away before even reaching your doorstep.

Alarms and motion-detector lights will make your home much less appealing to criminals. Because burglars always look for easy targets, most of them will run away at any sign of alarm or tell-tale lights.

Homemade Security Cameras

Security cameras can be expensive, but you don’t have to buy one. Use that old smartphone forgotten in your drawer as a security camera. The conversion is actually pretty simple, and there are loads of apps for Android and iOS to help you. Once you’ve chosen an app, find a place to install the camera, bearing in mind that it’ll need a power source to work continuously.

Get Appropriate Locks

Consider upgrading your old and rusty locks with something safer and more modern. Most burglars use bolt cutters to break through regular locks. Using a sturdier lock with less shackle exposed makes the burglar’s job more difficult.

Because they need to work fast, most of them will avoid such locks. Consider installing smart locks, which you can control via smartphone; they’ll also tell you if someone is trying to break it.

On top of these tips, beware of what you post on social media. There’s no way to know who’s reading, so avoid giving information and pictures that criminals might find helpful. Above all, keep your most valuable belongings out of sight, preferably in a safe.

After applying the tips above, your home will be a much safer place. One can never be too safe, and losses caused by burglaries every year is enough reason for taking home security seriously.
