Hang a Dust Barrier Early

The sheeting should be fixed up prior to commencement of works, with edges taped to prevent lifting and it should be weighted down at the bottom to prevent it from rising up off the floor.

Agree Working Hours Upfront

Write down agreed start/finish times with your home extension builder before the work commences. In addition to these agreed times, construction site safety requirements regarding noise and dust are also to be adhered to. Ask your builder to describe how he intends to address both of these areas.

If the home extension is to be built next to the kitchen then a temporary kitchen can be set up in a different room of the house. This can consist of a camping stove, a microwave and a table. This will enable the kitchen to be in use within a few weeks.

Protect Adjoining Rooms

In the rooms next to your home extension, protect the floors with hardboard and the furniture with dust sheets. These can be hired or bought cheaply and are easily removed at the end of each day.

Tell Your Neighbours First

Most people are very understanding if they are informed of the building work taking place and of the estimated duration of the work. In most cases it is better to inform your neighbours prior to commencing work on site.
