How to take care of drains to prevent clogging?

drains to prevent clogging

Seldom people pay attention to the plumbing system unless it draws their attention by making some noise or shows signs of choking. If you hear a gurgling sound in the sink or basin, it is a sign of some choking of the drain pipes that throttle the flow of water and produces the sound. Similarly, you might hear a hammering sound in the bathroom pipelines which could be due to an effect known as a water hammer and needs some Brisbane Plumbing and Drainage expert to set it right.  When it comes to drains, be careful to avoid clogs, which is not much difficult if you know some of the best practices that can save you money and the hassles of drain cleaning.

Act before the damage sets in by paying attention to what goes into the drain so that you can prevent unwanted items from going into the drain and clogging it. While it might be hard to prevent hair from going into the drains in the kitchen or bathroom, there are many other things that you can do to avoid choked drains.

Check the water temperature

Using hot water in sinks is quite common because people love to wash their hands in lukewarm water. If you are practising the same, then unknowingly you are doing a lot of good for the drainage system because it stays clean when hot water flows through it by breaking up the grease and oil particles and preventing any build-up that can clog the drain. Therefore, flushing the drain with hot water at least once a week is one of the best practices that help to avoid drain choking. However, do not use hot water when you run your disposal because it would melt the oil and grease and form a coating in the pipes that can lead to blockage later. Coldwater solidifies grease and oil that is easy to break down during disposal.

Segregate grease

Keep grease out from the disposal as much as possible. It will help to avoid forming large solid clogs inside pipes as it mixes with other wastes.  Never pour oil and grease into the kitchen drain but collect it in some containers to dispose of it separately.

Use a drain trap

Hair, crumbs, and soap scum are some substances that do not flow smoothly through the drain. These tend to block the drain quickly and slow down the flow of water. It is common for such items to get trapped in bathroom and kitchen drains. To prevent these and other similar things from going inside the drain, place a drain trap over the sink opening. The trap will arrest the solid items which you can remove and prevent clogging.

Beware of certain items

In addition to the items mentioned above, there is a long list of other things that can cause drain clogging. Be watchful and segregate items like eggshells, medications, household cleaning products, coffee grounds, fruit peels napkins, and paper towels from going into the drain.

These items are hard to breakdown and pose a significant threat for drains by blocking it.
