Is It Worth It To Reupholster a Sofa?

Reupholstering a sofa can be cheaper than replacing it. However, cost shouldn’t be the only criteria used to decide whether to replace loose sofa covers. Consider other essential factors to make the correct decision.

If you wonder whether the decision to reupholster your sofa is the correct one, you are in the right place. This post will help you discover what to consider to determine if reupholstering a sofa is worth it.

Things To Consider

You’ll have to consider various aspects to decide whether you’ll reupholster a sofa.

  1. The Piece’s Age

Determine if the sofa is over ten years old. For example, you may ask the seller at a used furniture dealership or a yard sale about the piece’s history. Most furniture built within the last decade isn’t strong enough to be worth reupholstering. It may be a good sign if people have used the sofa for 10-15 years without challenges.

  1. Determine How Sturdy the Piece Is

Shake the piece from the back and by each arm. You may also check whether it rocks, wobbles, or feels unsteady. It may not be worth reupholstering if it isn’t sturdy. However, it may be an excellent candidate if it is sturdy and well made.

  1. Examine the Frame

The frame should be from hardwood and have few knots. It is best if dowels and glue secure the joints instead of staples. You may remove the cushions and lift the sofa to discover if the frame is hardwood. It is likely to be high quality if it is heavy for its size.

  1. Examine the Frame’s Springs

Check the springs in the sofa’s frame. High-quality pieces have coiled springs held with twine across the platform in an asterisk pattern. The sofa may not be worth reupholstering if it has rubber panels in place of springs. Pat the sofa’s underside and feel if the dust cover is tight if you can’t see the springs. The sofa may have excellent construction if the dust cover is tight.

  1. Squeeze the Piece’s Padding

Squeeze the sofa’s back and padded arms. In addition, press on its cushions. These parts may comprise low-quality foam if they compress easily or feel squishy. Therefore, reupholstering the sofa may be a poor investment. This step may be worth it if the parts feel lumpy or firm.

  1. Check the Cost

The cost to reupholster sofa may show if it is worth it. You’ll pay £400-5,000 to reupholster. The specific amount you pay depends on the upholstery fabric, couch’s condition, transportation expenses, sofa type, labour charges, etc. Evaluate the amount the business charges to determine if it is worth reupholstering the sofa. You may also compare different companies before settling on one.

The decision to reupholster a sofa can be a significant one. The correct choice can save you a lot of money. You may also keep and improve an essential fixture on your property if you choose to reupholster the piece. Consider these six aspects to make the correct call.
