What Do Civil Engineers Do?

Whether you realize it or not, civil engineers provide a lot of logistical support for the infrastructure that makes your life possible. From land use surveys for property development and resource extraction to civil planning services like traffic control and roadway design, civil engineers put in a lot of work solving the common problems of how to best use shared resources for both private interests and the public.

Land Surveys

One of the most common reasons the average person would hire a licensed professional engineer that deals with land use is to have a private property surveyed before building on it or selling it. Civil engineers often need surveys as part of detailed land use or resource availability studies, and many of them offer standalone survey services for any purpose. Since most people need a land survey before selling property, it is the one time that your industry and role do not affect your chances of getting to know a civil engineer’s work.

Public Land Development

City and state governments often employ civil engineers in various capacities where land use is concerned, but they also contract work out to private engineering firms when major works like highway construction are underway. That is because large infrastructure projects are often best handled by players that specialize in those services for several different local governments at the city or country level. They also consult regularly on public resource use and the feasibility of leasing resource rights to private companies.

Careers in Civil Engineering

The demand for ecologically friendly building design has sparked a growing interest in civil engineering careers, but there are a lot more opportunities out there than just what you will find in green building development. Hydraulic engineering, urban sanitation systems, and even geoengineering are also growing fields of opportunity for those seeking a meaningful and challenging career.
