When you think of pests, you may concentrate on those that you consider to be the real ‘bad guys’, such as cockroaches and rats. While it’s true that this type of pest tends to cause the most damage and spread disease, you should not dismiss others as harmless. Take silverfish for instance; aside from looking really creepy, they can cause more damage than you think.

A silverfish infestation can lead to damage to interior décor and personal items. As soon as you see silverfish in areas of your home, you need to find out more about how to deal with the problem. If you do not do so, they can continue on their trail of destruction.

Silverfish and the décor in your home

If you are proud of the beautiful wallpaper hanging in your home, you need to protect it from silverfish. These tiny pests gorge themselves on starch that is found in paper. If you do not resolve a silverfish problem, they will eventually ruin the pristine look of the walls in your home.

Are you having silverfish for dinner?

This may sound like a completely gross question; but the fact is that silverfish can chew food packaging. This means that they can infest products that you are going to eat. Always check food packaging for any signs of damage caused by silverfish, or other pests such as weevils. Never use food which may have been contaminated. In order to try and avoid food contamination, you should keep food storage areas clean and tidy and remove food from packaging, storing it in plastic or glass containers with tight lids.

Your clothes are at risk from silverfish damage

Silverfish do not just eat wallpaper, they can make a snack out of many household objects, such as toothpaste and magazines. They are also quite happy to nibble on clothes. Many people just assume they have a problem with moths, if they find holes in their clothes. In fact, silverfish may be the culprits. If you do not want your clothes to be damaged, you need to deal with a silverfish problem as soon as you can.

Silverfish are there for a reason

Aside from recognizing that silverfish can be destructive, it’s also important to realize that they are in your home for a reason. They usually enter a property when there is some sort of water damage present. They gain entry through gaps caused by this damage, and they love the damp conditions. This means that silverfish are usually a sign of a bigger problem. You need to find out more info about how to get rid of the silverfish and identify underlying issues. If you do not do so, you could find yourself faced with problems such as:

  • Wet rot.
  • Infestation by other pests such as termites.

Silverfish do not just look creepy, they are destructive. Get rid of these invaders as soon as you can, and deal with any issues that may have led to their presence in the first place.
