After Disaster Strikes

No matter where you live, disaster can strike in one form or another. From floods to forest fires, hurricanes, ice storms, and blizzards, the potential is there. Knowing what to do afterward is essential. You can prepare to a certain extent, but once the damage is done, it can be overwhelming.

Structural Stability of Your Home and OutbuildingsWater and fire can damage property to the point that it is unsafe to occupy. The structural damage caused by both can compromise the joists, beams, interior and exterior walls, and wiring. Often the only choice is to tear down the home or building and have a new one constructed. One example of residential demolition contractors in Charlotte NC is Piedmont Grading and Wrecking Company Inc.

Contamination is a ConcernIf your home or business has been flooded, it is likely that it will be unsafe to occupy for a while. Furniture and personal belongings may not be salvageable. In addition to these items, your walls, flooring, ceilings, and the foundation itself can be damaged. Depending on the severity of the flooding, it can take weeks to get rid of the contaminants contained in flood water. Standing water is conducive to the growth of bacteria, and mold can develop quickly. Special chemicals and equipment are needed for cleaning.

Fire DamageHouse fires can cause more damage than the eye can see. Destruction of personal items, furniture, and appliances is just part of the problem. The smoke from a fire will get into any porous surface within the home. It can penetrate walls, ceilings, HVAC units, and flooring. It is important to have areas professionally cleaned because soot and smoke odors can linger inside the home for long periods of time and can cause people to experience breathing problems.

These are just a few of the disasters that can occur. Learning how to deal with the aftermath is essential, not only for safety, but for health. Often time is of the essence after a disaster. Beginning the cleanup quickly can make a difference in minimizing the repairs that will be needed.
