Which Sludge Dewatering Technology Should You Choose?

There are several types of sludge dewatering technologies available that effectively treat industrial waste. To get the most cost-effective solution, you will want to ensure that the machine you use is optimum for the type of sediment you are producing.

Plate and Frame Filter Press

Plate and frame filter presses can remove enough water so that you end up with a filter cake that is 40 to 70% solids by weight. You should use this type of technology on silt that requires you to remove most of the liquid, such as sludge from chemical plants and other production facilities.

Belt Press

A belt press will remove enough water so that you are left with a filter cake that is close to 25% solids by weight. Therefore, it is typically used when it is not necessary to remove a high percentage of water from the waste. For example, a belt press may be used to process paper mill, digester, or biological sediment.

Centrifuges

A centrifuge typically removes more water than a belt press, but not as much as the plate and frame filter press. If using this type of machine, you will be left with a filter cake that is 25 to 40% solids by weight. Centrifuges can be used on many types of silt, although they tend to be popular for cleaning sewage sludge. This piece of equipment is also popular because it tends to be the most environmentally friendly.

Geomembrane Solutions

Geomembrane solutions are often used to treat sludge that has a high volume of water with little solids present. You may use this type of technology to treat residuals from a water filtration plant or wastewater.

There are a variety of methods that can be used to dewater waste. Choosing the best machinery for your sediment will allow you to dewater your silt efficiently and cost-effectively.
