How to measure for an interior door?

how to measure for an interior door

Measuring for an interior door is a fairly straightforward process. You’ll want to measure the opening, including the frame of any windows or other features, and then subtract those measurements in order to get the exact size of what you need.

How to measure for an interior door?

You need to take accurate measurements when you’re replacing your interior doors. If you don’t, the new door won’t fit and it’ll be impossible to open or close.

The best way to measure is with a tape measure, but if you don’t have one lying around, make sure that someone else in your household has one so that you can borrow it. You will also need a pencil for marking down the measurements as well as an eraser for erasing any mistakes made along the way (you may want to mark out each measurement twice just in case).

When measuring an existing door, get down on all fours and look at where the hinges are located on both sides of the doorframe by using a flashlight if necessary. This will help identify exactly how thick of wood should be removed from each side so that it fits correctly into its frame when reinstalled there later on down at your local hardware store!

Measure the width of the distance

Now, measure the width of the distance, including trim. It is important to measure from the center of the door to wall. If you are measuring a hollow metal door with no trim, simply measure from one side of the frame to another.

Measure the height of the door opening

Measurements need to be taken in three spots: the top of the opening (including trim), the latch side of the door and at a point halfway between the top and bottom. If you have casement style hinges, measure from where they are located to get your measurement for a 36″ x 80″ door.

Determine how far the door needs to swing

The distance you need to measure for a door swing depends on how far it needs to open. There are four main types of door swings:

  • Swing-in doors swing into the room, while swing-out doors swing out (think of a garage door).
  • Pocket doors slide along a track when opened, while sliding or gliding doors slide in and out on their own tracks or tracks built into the wall.
  • Sliding glass doors can be operated manually or electronically.

Measure your door knob height

Measure from the floor to the top of the door knob. This is your standard height measurement. If you want to replace your current door handle with something else, such as a lever handle or something more decorative, then you may need to get a longer door knob than this standard length.

If there’s not enough room for a longer-sized door knob because of existing trim work or other obstructions on either side of the doorway that make it difficult or impossible for someone entering through that space–you can always use two shorter ones instead!

Conclusion

There are many things you should take into consideration when determining how large your door will be. This includes the location of your door, the amount of space available on each side of it and whether or not there is any space above or below it. It can feel overwhelming at first but once you have done this a few times, measuring for doors will become second nature for you!
