Autumn Garden To Do List

Autumn is here at last – the falling leaves, increasingly dark evenings and dropping temperatures herald the start of the change in the season. Although we won’t be able to enjoy evenings sat in the garden and hot sunny days with a barbeque for the next few months, now is the ideal time to get on with lots of garden jobs before the Spring arrives. Spending the time now to prepare your garden and make improvements mean it will be even better when the weather is good enough to enjoy it properly again. It is not just you who looks forward to your garden this spring and summer, deer and other wildlife are waiting too. Be sure to install proper deer fencing to keep your garden thriivng. Here are some ideas for how you can improve the garden at this time of the year…

Garden Furniture – If your garden furniture is looking a bit worse for wear, now is the ideal time to sort it out! Give the furniture that you currently have a makeover. A fresh coat of paint on wooden furniture can give it a new lease of life, and if you are creative, you could even make some washable cushions or covers to go on it. Of course, it is best to store it indoors during the winter such as in a garage or a shed to keep it safe from the wintery weather, or alternatively you could put a weatherproof cover over it.

It is also a good time to buy new garden furniture, a many of the garden centres have sales on it at this time of the year, so if you had your eye on some in the Spring you may well be able to get it at a good, discounted price now!

A Summerhouse or Garden Room – This is a fantastic addition to the garden and is also a space that you will be able to use in the winter months too. Having that indoor outdoor space is great and can add to your home and garden in many ways. There are many companies that can provide and build garden rooms for you, or you could design and build it yourself if you are skilled at that sort of thing. Sourcing your own materials such as wood from this timber merchants Southampton based www.timbco.co.uk/ will save you money but you will need to make sure that you have the time and the skills to do it yourself if you decide to go down this route.

Make Repairs – In the autumn, it is a good idea to repair all of those things that need doing – with winter comes high winds and torrential rain which can make a small problem a lot worse. Repair broken fences that may be at risk of blowing down in a storm and keep an eye on gutters for blockages – moss and autumn leaves are a common culprit for blocking gutters and it is important to get them all cleared out before the problem worsens. Look for water pouring from a gutter, overflowing drains, or obvious cracks or breakages in pipes too.
