5 Important Drain Clog Prevention Tips for Homeowners

Let’s face it. Clogs are gross. They are a pain to deal with. They literally stink. Clogs can end up becoming quite expensive if the problem persists untreated. Thankfully, achieving and maintaining a clog-free drain is much easier than it initially seems.

Here are a few tips on how to keep your drain clog-free.

1. Clean Your Drain!

Did you know that clogged drains can easily be avoided by giving your drain some extra attention? Routine drain maintenance is crucial to preventing clogged drains.

This includes regular cleaning and taking special care that wayward food does not find its way down the drain. Once there, it can become lodged and cause problems. After cleaning your drain, the following tips should be much more effective.

2. Mesh Screens

This is one of the simplest and most effective methods of preventing a clogged drain. Place a mesh screen over it. This is a great way to catch wayward food particles, hair, and other residue. These things can easily get stuck and accumulate over time.

Another thing homeowners can do to increase the mesh screen’s effectiveness is to brush their hair before bathing. This transfers loose hairs to their brush. It minimizes the amount that could come into contact with the screen.

3. Repeat After Me, The Garbage Disposal is Not a Trashcan

Many homeowners make the mistake of treating their garbage disposal like a trashcan. They allow large, solid, oddly-shaped substances to pass through. Garbage disposals are constructed to handle very precise amounts of certain foods.

They are not supposed to be a free-for-all for every food item on the plate. Reduce dependence on the garbage disposal altogether. In turn, homeowners minimize their chances of experiencing a clog.

4. Ever heard of an auger?

Plumbers work great, too. However, auger’s, or, drain snakes as they’re sometimes called, are a great way to remove small clogs. They save homeowners a lot of money in the long run. That is because they will call the plumber less frequently, and only when it pertains to more serious issues.

5. Don’t Pour Pet Hair Down the Drain

Do you own pets? It is important to remember that washing them over the drain is an easy way to cause a clog. Avoid this by washing your pet outside. You can also do it in a portable tub that can be transferred outside. This should further minimize the chances the drain has of becoming clogged.

Naturally, no one is perfect. Accidents are bound to happen. If you experience a clogged drain that is beyond the scope of any of the repairs listed above, that’s no problem. Organizations like South Auckland Plumbing are available. They have trained staff ready to service all of your plumbing needs.
