How to maintain your petrol mower

For owners of petrol mowers, it’s important to keep it running smoothly so you can get the maximum life expectancy from it. Some simple monthly maintenance is usually all that is required to keep your machine running at peak performance. Refer back to the manufacturer’s manual to make sure you are doing the right thing and using the right equipment. Here are some steps for achieving this:

Remove the cap to the spark plug and see if the spark plug is grimy. You’ll need an adjustable spanner and a socket wrench to remove the spark plug and wipe it clean if necessary. A super dirty spark plug can be replaced for only a few pounds.

Remove the dipstick, give it a wipe, replace it and then remove again. Ensure the oil reaches the indicator line. Refer to the manual to find out which type of oil is required if topping up is necessary.

The air filter should also be checked monthly so you can replace if it becomes too dirty. Seek help from a local dealer if you’re unsure which part you need. For more information about Briggs And Stratton Parts, visit a site like DIY Engine Parts

It is important to lubricate the parts by wiping down with a suitable lighter oil which will also help prevent rusting.

To clean the underside of the mower, gently tip it onto its side being careful not to let oil pour into the air filter. Using a damp cloth, wipe down the underside to clear away any accumulation of grass.
