Essential Tips for Childproofing Your Home

Tips for Childproofing Your Home

Childproofing the house is one of the best things parents can do when their toddlers become precocious and want to explore everything. Unfortunately, since the tots don’t know about the danger, they often walk aimlessly, which can result in accidents if no adult supervises their every move. While it can be labour-intensive to identify the potential hazards around the household, it’s still important to do something about the ones readily seen.

However, even the most safety-conscious parents will miss a thing or two, so it will be best to work with a contractor to childproof every room in the house completely. It will take a lot of time, but the tradeoff will be worth it. The process also requires redesigning or renovating some rooms, so it’s best if homemakers work with a good contractor. They must also hire a reputable skip hire company like valleytrading.co.uk to dispose of the waste produced from the renovation efficiently.

Here are some tips for childproofing your house.

Keep candles and matches out of reach

Children are naturally curious and always seem to put things inside their mouths. Some of the hazards that they will encounter are matches and candles. Playing with matches can lead to accidental fires, and candles present a choking hazard. You must also identify other choking hazards around the house and place them outside your child’s reach.

Ensure photo frames are securely mounted

Glass photo frames can be a huge risk, especially when children get hold of them. These frames can break, and the glass shards can spew everywhere, leading to cuts and other injuries. So it’s necessary to keep these frames out of your child’s reach or securely mounted on the wall. You can also replace the frames with plastic ones, which would be more durable and less hazardous.

Mount the TV securely

Since tots don’t have any idea of danger, they will climb over things and among the most challenging ones include the TV. If you have a TV stand, consider removing it and instead mounting the TV onto the wall. This will reduce the possibility of the TV falling on your tot when they climb the stand out of curiosity.

Place window guards

Ensure that windows will open at least three inches, about the size of an adult first. Else, be ready to install window guards to provide better safety for your kids. If you have casement windows, ensure that the cranks are secure and out of the kids’ reach.

Keep blinds cordless

Window treatments should be cordless as much as possible. You wouldn’t want to risk having the cord wrapped accidentally on your child’s neck, do you? So instead, you can cut the cords and attach tassels.

Install child gates

Another way to childproof the house is to use portable child gates. This will help keep the kids safely inside a room until they can climb the barrier.

Endnotes

Childproofing the house is an extensive exercise. As parents, you must identify all the hazards you can and find a way to ensure that your children will be as safe as possible.
