Countertops

If there’s one thing that you don’t want in the kitchen it’s sharp corners and edges. No matter what type of countertop material you select for the home, you’ll want to be sure it comes with soft, rounded edges and corners to keep your kids safe.

One good knock of the head against the edge or corner of the countertop can result in merely a bump and bruise or a bloody gash that will need to medical attention fast.

The height of your counters is something to consider as well. If your children are eager to help out in the kitchen or they’re old enough now to make their own peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, you may want to think about building at least a portion of the countertop a little lower so your kids can reach it. The typical solution to a countertop that’s too high is to bring a step stool into the kitchen but that poses potential slip and fall risks.

Finally, keep your counters safe and clean by installing a surface that’s easy to maintain. Quartz is among some of the best and most hygienic materials available today.

Faucets

Water is an essential component of any kitchen but kids can sometimes forget to turn the water off or accidentally turn the hot water all the way on. But with touchless options available now, these risks are no longer a concern. You don’t need to worry if the water is still running and many of the newer models come with temperature settings that limit how hot the water can get when it’s coming out of the faucet.

These are ideal for homes where young children are present and are able to reach the faucets in the kitchen sink.

Storage Options

When you assign a certain area of the kitchen that is tasked solely with keeping kid-friendly items stored, you’re not only making it more fun for the kids to retrieve and use their things, but you’re also making the kitchen safer and neater as well.

Choose a cabinet and/or drawer that holds only kid things like favorite cups and glasses, plates, bowls, utensils, even certain food staples like cereals and snacks. Make sure it’s easy for them to reach. Segregating these things from the rest of the kitchen can be perfect for young kids who should be kept from sharp utensils that can hurt them or pans, pots, or containers they may want to play with when you’re not around.

You can also give your kids their own refrigerator drawers and shelves for perishable food and drinks that need to be kept cold.
