If in winter during rainy and cold days, note that some water does not come out of some downpipes connected to the gutters, it means that there are bad traffic jams caused by leaves and branches. In order to prevent water infiltration into the house during the rains, it is necessary to take adequate action. In this regard, here is a guide with some tips on how to unclog a pipe and gutters.
How to unclog a pipe and gutter?
You will need:
- Ladder
- Pressure washers
- Compressor
- Spring flexible
Remove the leaves from the gutters
If you’re using galvanised steel gutters for your home, proceed by placing the ladder on them, as it is a fairly resistant material. If, on the other hand, they are made of PVC, it is better to avoid any contact because they could be damaged. In this case, it is better to opt for fixed support, perhaps equipped with wheels at the base. A further tip is never to do this job alone, but always in the company of someone who can assist you. That said, start removing pine leaves or needles from the eaves, and with shear cut the excess vegetation that grows in the immediate vicinity. However, if there is a large tree near the roof, clean the tiles from the leaves which, falling, could cause blockages.
Use the pressure washer
To remove the debris that clogs the downpipes, that is the pipes for descending the water from the roof, you must instead use a long wire or a broomstick wrapped in a rag, and then pour a few buckets of water. If you do not get positive results, the pipes must be dismantled piece by piece and cleaned separately. However, there are also some tools that properly used can provide excellent results. The first is the pressure washer formed by a flexible hose of about ten meters from which a strong jet of water comes out. If the clogging of the pipes connected to the gutter occurred in the curves, to work without problems it is better to disassemble the curved lower part and insert the nozzle of a compressor or a blower from the bottom up.
Use a spring hose
A second tool, on the other hand, is the spring hose which is generally used to unclog the toilet drain. In this case, it is a matter of gradually inserting it into the cavity of the tube and then turning the crank that allows you to roll up on itself and hook any materials and various debris. In this case, the operation should be done after pouring caustic soda into the pipes and leave it to act for at least half an hour in order to facilitate the work.
Check the drain cockpit
If after performing one of the aforementioned operations the result is still not satisfactory and you notice a return of water upwards, then it is appropriate to check the drainage well of the downpipe which could be clogged, and therefore this sort of cap prevents water to drain. The ideal is to open the trap door, protect your hands with thick gloves and remove hardened debris and foliage. At the end of the work, test and pour a couple of buckets of water to see if it regularly flows into the underground pipes. In the event of a successful outcome, all you have to do is close the trap door and then definitively complete the cleaning of pipes and gutters.
