Designing a Functional and Stylish Deck and Patio Layout

Functional and Stylish Deck and Patio Layout

A well-styled deck can turn a simple outdoor space into an al fresco family room or party area. Understanding your client’s needs is the key to creating a stylish and clients deck.

Consider the time they’ll spend dining, relaxing, and enjoying their view. This will help you determine the ideal size of their deck and furniture.

Think Big

When building a deck or patio, thinking big and incorporating elements to make the space look complete is important. This is especially true for large decks, which can be complicated by landscape features like small trees, vents, and AC units that must be incorporated into the final design.

For this deck, stately columns were incorporated into the design to create a sense of elegance and make the transition between the patio and backyard feel smooth and consistent. Decorative cues from indoor comforts like throw pillows also help the two spaces feel cohesive and like they were always meant to be together.

Another key consideration when designing a deck is the view. Consider including a seating area that looks out on a scenic view or a countertop that doubles as a backyard bar. For example, if your property has a charming brook, you could build a deck that reaches right up to the water’s edge for wading, fishing, or swimming.

Add Plant Walls

A plant wall brings beauty and life to a deck. It can also help increase a space’s value for potential buyers. It creates a sense of seclusion and privacy on your property and shows you care about the environment.

Adding an outdoor bar turns your deck into a fun place to entertain or relax. A beverage station gives you room to store and serve drinks and can also be a focal point of your design.

Small-deck ideas and layouts often feature limited space, making details more noticeable. Decorative cues like striped all-weather flooring can add eye appeal and define spaces. Toss all-weather throw pillows in cheerful colors and patterns to invite friends and family to linger and enjoy the view. Add a rolling shade for ultimate flexibility, welcoming or blocking out the sun as the mood strikes. A pergola can offer visual relief, too. It can help a narrow deck feel more open and spacious while dividing a seating area from dining or lounge areas.

Add Pots and Planters

A deck can be a great place to relax or entertain, but it’s also ideal for planting a garden. With a few creative ideas, you can turn your deck into a verdant oasis that will delight friends and family.

Try adding planters to your deck design for a stylish look that won’t break the bank. These larger containers can be filled with various flowers to add vibrancy and interest to your deck. Unlike built-in flower beds, these planters can easily move around the deck for more sun or shade as needed.

Decks often feel cold and bare, but you can warm up yours with a large daybed or cozy throws that can be moved easily to the sun or shade. Layer a large outdoor area rug over the top for a luxuriously comfortable seating arrangement. Hanging plants and conversation-starting art pieces can make your deck feel more personal.

Add Swings

The idea of sitting on a deck and relaxing with friends while sipping icy beverages is timeless, but today’s concept of the space differs considerably from previous decades. Instead of just a place to entertain, decks and patios can now serve as three (or even four) season living spaces for the entire family.

Adding a swing or two to your deck is the perfect way to express your style. Whether you want to add a cozy spot for meditation or a fun swing to enjoy a cup of coffee, these additions will elevate your deck design.

If you have a deck with a view, frame it with a lush garden to draw the eye and enhance its visual appeal. Alternatively, create a separate work area to make meal prep easier by installing an outdoor kitchen. You can further dress up the area by painting the deck railing to complement your design, as this home did.
