How to Control Pigeon Population Growth in Phoenix?

Hny5rft November 09, 2022 Reviews Leave a Comment

Pigeons have long been a nuisance to humans, congregating in cities and dirtying up buildings with their unending quest for food. In recent years, however, they have become more than just a nuisance – they have become a health hazard, as their droppings can spread disease. As a result, many people have turned to cruel control methods, such as poisoning or trapping. However, there are more humane ways to control the pigeon population without harming them.

Here are nine methods that you can try:

1. Birth Control:

There are many ways to help reduce the pigeon population, one being preventing them from breeding. This is a popular method for pigeon control in Phoenix and can be administered to pigeons through their food or water.

While this method is effective, it requires ongoing effort to ensure that the pigeons have access to contraceptive-laced food or water.

Additionally, it may take some time for the contraceptive to take effect, so this method is not recommended for those looking for an immediate solution. However, contraceptive measures can help to reduce the pigeon population in the long term.

2. Pigeon Deterrents:

There are many products that you can use to deter pigeons from landing or roosting in certain areas of your property. One such product is known as bird spikes, which are strips of long, sharp needle-like objects that attach either permanently or temporarily onto roofs or ledges where pigeons gather. Bird spikes prevent pigeons from landing, making it difficult for them to roost where they are not wanted.

3. Netting:

Another humane way to control pigeon populations is through the netting. This involves placing netting around buildings and other areas that are frequented by pigeons to prevent them from accessing those spaces. This method may take some time to be effective, but it is generally considered preferable to more harmful methods such as poisoning or trapping.

4. Hazing:

Hazing generally involves making the environment uncomfortable for pigeons so they will choose to leave. This can be done in several ways, such as using loud noises or bright lights.

Hazing is considered to be a humane way to control pigeon populations, as it does not require them to be killed. While hazing may not be 100% effective, it can be a helpful tool for managing pigeon populations ethically and practically.

5. Artificial Nesting Sites

Many cities, including Phoenix, have recognized the problem of pigeon overpopulation and have put up some control measures rather than resorting to lethal control. One popular pigeon control method in Phoenix is placing artificial nesting sites in strategic locations throughout the city. These usually consist of ledges or boxes designed to mimic natural roosting spots. By providing pigeons with alternative places to nest, you can encourage them to move away from areas where they are not welcome. While this method may not be 100% effective, it can help to reduce the number of pigeons in an area and make them easier to manage.

6. Habitat Modification:

Another way to discourage pigeons from nesting in an area is by altering the environment. This can involve removing potential nesting sites, modifying their habitats, or building physical barriers around the area. For example, placing netting or spikes on ledges and window sills can help prevent pigeons from landing and roosting in these areas.

7.  Remove Food Sources

Though you may not be able to control what the pigeons are fed by others in your neighborhood or local park, there are some things you can do on your property to minimize food sources for these birds. Put away pet foods and bird feeders when not being used, especially those with seeds that pigeons love. Keep outdoor tables clean and free of crumbs, and remove anything from your home’s exterior that could attract these birds, such as trash cans with food particles.

8. Try Natural Deterrents

If you are looking for a more natural way to keep pigeons away from your home, there are several natural deterrents that can be effective in discouraging these birds from roosting and nesting around your property.

One of the most common pigeon deterrents is pepper spray or other hot-pepper-based formulas, which irritate the birds’ sensitive nostrils and make it uncomfortable for them to remain in the area. In addition, plants such as lavender and marigolds have been shown to deter these birds due to their strong scent, and it would be wise to plant them as a long term solution

9. Falconry

Falconry may be an effective way to discourage pigeons from roosting in the areas around your home. The birds can easily recognize and react to the sight of a falcon and may avoid landing and nesting in these areas.

However, you will likely need to work with a professional falconer if you wish to use this method.
