How to Protect an Organic Urban Food Garden

Organic Urban Food Garden

Urban food gardens are becoming increasingly popular as the price of organic foods increases. Growing food at home provides a feeling of accomplishment and excitement; in addition, the food often has far more flavor than the food that is found in supermarkets. However, there are quite a few obstacles to face when growing food. Nearly every animal wants a piece of the garden, from dogs and cats down to the tiniest aphid.

Using Organic Pesticides

When it comes to insects, organic pesticides are the best course of action. Some can be made from ingredients found in many homes across the world, making them cost effective and easy to produce. Pesticides eliminate insects thatĀ dine and reproduceĀ on certain crops, commonly destroying the plants when left to their own devices. Catching them and controlling them early is the best way to avoid extensive damage.

Deterring Birds

Birds love many different berries and grain crops, from low lying strawberries to the highest ears of corn. Some people use netting above their gardens, which prevents birds from landing in the garden. Other tricks include using reflective surfaces or moving items, such as foil pinwheels. Scarecrows can be quite effective, too; especially if they produce noises.

Installing Fencing

Fencing is one of the best ways to deter the many dogs and cats in urban areas. Fence installation companies in Hawthorn Woods, IL can generally install a fence within a matter of days, making it an ideal project even during the late spring. Once the fence is in, seedlings will no longer be trampled by dogs or dug up by cats.

Removing Brush

Brush provides a safe resting area and nesting area for birds, rabbits, mice, and voles. Each of these animals can do significant damage to the fruits and vegetables later in the season. Remove any low lying brush in order to keep these animals from nesting and resting nearby. By placing a greater distance between nesting areas and the garden, urban gardeners will face less damage.

Urban gardens are an excellent way to put fresh food on the table. Garden fresh food may require a bit of work, but it offers far more flavor!
