Useful Tips for Cleaning the Drainage System in Bathrooms

There are really very few distasteful tasks like sewer cleaning. Hence, hiring a professional at this step can be the right solution for everyone. However, if you really don’t have any problem getting your hands dirty in any of the cleaning jobs; you can execute yourself on a routine basis. Clearing vents, clearing blockages and drain pipes allow smooth flow of water throughout the home. These cleaning jobs and preventive tasks can eliminate the need of calling a plumber, which can help you to save a substantial amount.

Bathroom sinks not draining properly

If you are facing issues with bathroom sink draining, and the toilet and shower are working fine, certainly there are specific blockages. You can discover this blockage area between your sink and the location where the sink directly connects to the drain of your bathroom. The usual place of blockages is located in the trap placed underneath the drain. There will be screws and fittings underneath the location that needs to be removed manually. The blockage needs to be thoroughly cleaned before replacing the pipe.

Tub and shower not draining as usual

Fixing the sink is a bit trickier than compared to drains because they are not easy to access. The traps for shower and tub lay underneath the floor of the washroom, in-between the joists. The ‘U’ and ‘S’ bend prevents sewer gas from getting back into the house. The issue can be resolved by simply removing the drain screens in the shower and tub, followed by removing any debris or hair. However, you can purchase an auger if this fails to work and crank it directly into the pipe for breaking the blockage.

Drainage problem in the toilet

Usually, the toilet comes with a built-in trap located beneath the bowl. Due to the excessive waste and build-up of toilet paper in this trap, blockages occur. A simple hand plunger can assist you in fixing the problem. The simple up and down action leads to the creation of pressure on top, and the clog will automatically break slowly underneath. If you are cleared with this action, clogs need to be taken out and disposed of. But it’s a warning that you should avoid flushing it because it may lead to blockage of the trap again. In that case, we will have to start over with the process once again. In case of substantial blockages, a hand crank auger may be required. Even if the issue still persists, a powered auger needs to be purchased, and finally, if that fails too, calling a plumber is the ultimate solution.

Blockages appearing frequently

Repeated blockages and slow water draining could be a possibly a sign of inadequate venting. When it comes to the plumbing vents in your bathroom, it comprises the pipes that connect to the drainage system. The pipes are properly located in the exterior portion behind your sink. They exit up to your roof from there. Usually, there is one vent in a standard bathroom that serves to prevent air locks in the fixtures. Additional vents become a necessity if there is a distance of 10 feet between your fixtures and the sink drain.

Note: It is advisable wearing long sleeves and rubber gloves when undertaking sewer cleaning jobs. A manual auger and plunger should be there in the tool kit for repairing minor blockages.
