How to keep your garage warm and dry in winter

If you intend to use your garage all year round, it makes sense to ensure it remains warm and dry during the colder months. Even if you don’t venture into your garage during the winter, it is still wise to protect it from cold and damp so that nothing gets ruined. Here are some tips to get your garage winter-ready.

Clean inside

Before you set about getting your garage ready for winter, give it a good clean and clear out. This makes it easier when you need to inspect it, or if you need to add insulation to walls or doors. Crucially, an organised garage makes life so much easier once you need to use it again.

Check the weather-stripping

Insulating your garage is one of the most important strategies for keeping it warm and dry over the winter, so check for any holes or cracks that might let in draughts or even rain from outside. Inspect the weather-stripping on all the windows and doors of your garage; over time, weather-stripping gets worn and becomes cracked, which can allow air to enter. If this is the case in your garage, you will need to fix or replace any suspect areas. Remove existing weather-stripping, making sure that you scrape away any remaining sealant, and then apply new weather-stripping. Always measure and correctly align the stripping to ensure you get a tight seal.

Add insulation

Even if you have carried out weather-stripping around your garage door, it is worth making sure the door itself is adequately insulated. A garage door covers a large surface area; therefore, adding insulation to the door can lock in heat and prevent the cold from outside getting in. Whether you add insulation to your existing garage door or decide it is time to purchase a new, more efficient door from a reputable supplier that provides garage door installation in St Albans, such as garagedoorsrus, don’t overlook this crucial tip.

It might also be worth insulating the walls of your garage to obtain heat-retaining effects. Similarly, if your garage has single-pane windows, you may find that replacing them with double-glazed windows offers better insulating benefits in the long term.

Add a heater

You can increase the temperature in your garage by adding a heater. A simple electric or gas heater will do the job.
